Body Mass Index is commonly used to assess one’s relative risk for health problems related to excess overweight and obesity. BMI is calculated using a person’s height and weight.
BMI measurements are widely used and the correlation of BMI and body fatness is fairly strong. However, they do have some limitations. A BMI score is not a direct measure of fatness. It is a measurement based on weight which accounts for both muscle and fat. It does not account for muscle mass, water retention, or body build. For example, a body builder would have a higher BMI (based on height and weight) but not be overweight.
